Taking Care of a Ridgeback
Are you looking for an exotic breed for a pet? The kind that most people do not know about? If so, there is a particular species that originated in Thailand. In ancient times, this dog was primarily used as a hunting companion. As such, it has retained its prey-catching instincts even to this day. One of the unique characteristics of this type of canine is that it has a patch of fur along the back that grow in the opposite direction than the rest of the coat. For this reason, it is aptly called the Thai Ridgeback.
Known for strength and stamina, overall this pedigree has relatively little or no inherent health conditions. In the past, there have only been minimal breeding, for this reason the total population is quite small compared to other species. However, be warned that it is prone to dermoid sinus, a genetic condition wherein single or multiple lumps are located along the dorsal midline. Another possible condition would be dysplasia, wherein a certain tissue has cellular abnormality.
The Thai Ridgeback is an ideal running companion. This breed enjoys spending time with its master. The problem is it has difficulty socialising and tends to show aggressive behaviour towards strangers and other canines. As such, you should discipline it properly. And because the fur is short, it is ideal for warm climate and thrives better with it.
As its nature suggests, this canine requires constant exercise, which means it has to be walked every day. It is also important that it does not get bored for it has the tendency to be highly destructive. For this reason, it would be best if you have a backyard or a large space in your home where it can frolic and play around. Be sure to secure a lengthy fence though since it can jump really high. It is also intelligent which means you can teach it various tricks, such as fetching, sitting, and rolling over.
As with any other pet, you should provide it with food, medicine and shelter and plenty of quality time. If you are a good owner, then it will be completely loyal and faithful to you.
